What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Above is a video walk-through of the search I did for Neo Noir distributor companies, I used Screencast-o-matic to make the screen video, and uploaded it to Vimeo to embed it to this website.

When searching "neo noir", I found a website which gave a list of the top 10 neo noir films, the web address is here, I chose a few of the films included in the list, and found out information about them by looking on their wikipedia pages. All films had different distributors, some of which were large companies and others smaller. Ideally, I wanted to find a small British company as I think they'd be most likey to distribute my film.

I have been studying Warner Bros. and Warp Films in my Media course, Warner Bros is a large American film company that owns theaters and film networks and so can distribute films themselves, whereas Warp Films is a small British film company and cannot.

A film distributor is a company that markets a film. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the method the film will be exhibited eg. DVD, television, Netflix, cinema.

As my target audience are young men, our distribution should mainly be online, as people between the ages of 15 - 25 will be more technologically advanced than those of other ages ranges, and so will be more aware of my media product if it is distributed online. However, there are issues of distributing online. My film could be leaked and then consumed online for free.

I believe distributing my film on Netflix will attract my target market as Netflix is a business that aims it's films mainly to a younger generation, 18 - late 20's. Netflix also has a wide range of film catergories, and so will raise awareness to those who use Netflix to watch my film. Netflix distributes classic Film Noirs and Neo Noirs; Brick, The Big Sleep and The Stranger.

An Independant British film company. Gets funding from the National Lottery, BBC films and Film4. Warp Films would be a good distributor as they distribute small budget films nationally, focusing on gritty films that deal with reality issues, such as death, heartbreak and crime, all of which are generally in Film Noirs and Neo Noirs.

An Independant American film company, more well known than Warp Films.  FilmDistrict show some films on Netflix as they are signed with them. Unlike Warp Films, FilmDistrict has distributed Neo Noirs in the past (Drive, as shown in the video).

StudioCanal is the film distributor we used in our OTS. It's part of a large group called Canal+, which is also part of Universal Studios. We chose StudioCanal in the end, as it was a studio that is for unique small films, and also because they distributed the film Mulholland Drive, a Neo Noir, and distributes action movies that are targetted at our target audience.
